ETF Backtest Calculator

Answer the question every investor asks: "what if I'd bought this years ago?" Pick any tracked ETF, set a starting date and amount, and optionally add a monthly contribution to model pound-cost averaging. You'll get the final value, your annualised return, the worst drawdown you'd have sat through, and a year-by-year breakdown.

Past performance doesn't predict future results. Assumes contributions on the first trading day of each month, no trading costs or taxes, and reinvested distributions. History is limited to the range published in the site's daily return data.

How This Backtest Works

The simulator walks forward through each trading day, compounding your balance by that day's total return. Returns are dividend- and split-adjusted, so distributions are treated as reinvested — the same basis used across ETFValuer's rankings and charts.

If you add a monthly contribution, the money goes in on the first trading day of each month. In that case the headline return switches to a money-weighted return (IRR) rather than a simple CAGR, because later contributions haven't been invested as long — reporting a naive start-to-finish CAGR would overstate what you actually earned.

What it doesn't model: trading commissions, bid/ask spreads, taxes on distributions or capital gains, and currency effects for non-USD investors. Expense ratios are already reflected, because fund prices are quoted net of fees — to see what those fees cost in isolation, use the fee calculator on any fund page.

History is limited to the range in the site's published daily return data, so the earliest available start date is roughly three years back. Past performance does not predict future results.
