For traditional mutual funds and index funds, NAV is calculated once per day, after the market closes, and that's the price at which all trades for that day are executed — regardless of whether you placed your order at 9:31 a.m. or 3:59 p.m.

When the market price falls meaningfully below NAV (a discount), the reverse happens: authorized participants buy the cheaper ETF shares, redeem them with the provider in exchange for the underlying stocks, and sell those stocks — reducing the ETF's share supply and pushing the price back up toward NAV.

This creation-and-redemption process happens continuously and largely invisibly to individual investors, but it's the reason ETF prices generally stay closely aligned with the value of what they actually hold, unlike a closed-end fund (a related but different structure), which can trade at a persistent premium or discount for extended periods because it lacks this same mechanism.
